Women seeking permanent birth control now have a new
option: the Essure™
procedure. Unlike tubal ligation which remains one of the most
popular forms of female birth control in the U.S, Essure does not
require any incision or penetration of the abdomen and can be
performed without general anesthesia. In addition, Essure's non
invasive procedure allows women to return home about 45 minutes after
the procedure is completed, and return to work generally in one day or
less after the day of the procedure. We are pleased to offer
this procedure in our office, instead of in a hospital setting or
ourpatient surgical center.
During the Essure procedure, a soft micro-insert is
placed into the fallopian tube through the cervix using a small
catheter. Once in place, the device stimulates tissue growth in
and around the micro-insert, forming an occlusion or blockage in the
fallopian tube, causing permanent sterilization.
The F.D.A.
approved Essure based on data from two separate clinical trials
involving over 600 women who relied on the current Essure design for
one to two years. Among these women, no pregnancies occurred
while relying on Essure for contraception. However, like all
other forms of birth control, Essure is not expected to be 100%
effective and another form of birth control must be used during the
three months following the procedure. It is important that women
speak with their healthcare providers regarding birth control options
so that appropriate risk factors and options can be discussed
thoroughly.
Doctors certified to perform the Essure procedure
are required to attend a comprehensive training program. Our
practice is one of a small handful of practices in Western MA currently
offering this procedure. If

Here's what some of our patients had to
say after having the Essure performed in our office:
"I dislike the prep work involved
with a hospital procedure - I put off traditional sterilization (tubal
ligation) because I didn't want to go through surgery. Having
Essure done in the office was like going in for any other gyn
appointment." (age 39)
"I thought this procedure was
going to be uncomfortable...but I was wrong. I'm happy I had the
Essure procedure done." (age 37)
"I chose the Essure procedure
because it is permanent. The procedure took about 15 minutes and
it wasn't very painful; also, no anesthesia was necessary. I went
jogging the same evening I had the Essure procedure done - no pain and
no bloating. I would recommend the Essure procedure to anyone who wants
sterilization!" (age 39)

The testimonials expressed on this website represent one
patient's experience with the Essure procedure, which may or may not be
different from the majority of experiences. Some women may not be
good candidates for the Essure procedure. As with any other medical
procedure, there are risks and considerations associated with Essure.
If you are interested in Essure, you should discuss your options with your
