What’s the Treatment Like in the Incon Therapy™ Program?

The Incon Therapy™ approach to incontinence is centered on strengthening existing pelvic floor muscles involved with incontinence. During your office visits, you learn how to exercise your pelvic floor muscles; heightened control is achieved as a result of increased muscle strength.

Biofeedback is the technology used to measure and monitor muscle activity painlessly while simultaneously providing auditory and visual "feedback" via a computer.  The information gathered from the biofeedback helps you identify and strengthen the muscles involved withIncon Therapy Sessions incontinence.  This feedback also helps in plotting the progress resulting from the exercises performed by you.  After your initial assessment, you perform specially designed exercises at home to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles and usually follow up at the office twice per week.  Urinary and fecal control is achieved as a result of improved muscles strength and coordination, and in most instances the treatment lasts six weeks or less.

How About the Incon Therapy™ Success Rate?

Patients treated with Incon Therapy™ have enjoyed a 95% improvement rate.  More remarkably, 87.5% of patients enjoy a complete cure for their once debilitating incontinence problem (that's almost 9 our of 10 patients!).

For patients who require another approach to incontinence, Incon biofeedback has been shown to complement medical therapies and surgical approaches to incontinence.  When combined with other treatments, the role of Incon Therapy™ is similar to the role of physical therapy in orthopedics.

What Is Different About Incon Therapy™ From Other Incontinence Treatments?

Incon Therapy™ uses technologically superior computer-based equipment developed after years of research in the United States and Canada.  Unlike other biofeedback programs, which use a standard protocol for all patients, Incon Therapy™ tailors the treatment to your individual needs.  Unique to the Incon Therapy™ system is a hand held, simple-to-use home computer which continues to give you feedback while recording muscle performance for the therapist to review.  If other approaches to your incontinence are necessary, combining Incon Therapy™ with other approaches to incontinence can maximize the benefits achieved.

How Long Will the Benefits Last From Incon Therapy™?

Because Incon Therapy™ actively involves you in your own treatment, often the benefits quickly become evident and can last a lifetime.  Through exercising and strengthening existing muscles, you are able to achieve an improvement in or cure for incontinence that will last indefinitely, provided there is no further injury or debilitation to these muscles and daily muscle maintenance exercises are performed.

What Is the First Step?

The first, and often most difficult step to achieving continence is to understand that you are not alone.  The next step is to schedule an appointment for an assessment.  Our understanding and friendly staff will work with you to determine the best approach to your bladder or bowel problem and will help you understand the treatment process.  To schedule your initial appointment, please contact the West Springfield or South Hadley office of Incon Therapy™ of Western Massachusetts, or ask you physician to refer you to our program.

What Do Current or Past Patients Have To Say About Their Experience with Incon Therapy™?

"The caring professionals at Incon Therapy taught me why leakages occur and then how to use my muscles to stop the problem.  Now instead of being worried about leaks when exercising or even laughing, I'm back in control of my body, and the freedom feels great!" (age 48)

"Before seeking treatment for this problem, I was not only in serious physical discomfort, but I was also distraught and quite fearful about the changes in my body and my inability to reverse these changes.  At my relatively young age, I was almost panic stricken about how this condition would affect my long-term lifestyle.  I was unable to enjoy our typical family activities such as hiking and cycling.  And intimacy with my husband was also a concern.  Through this program, I have been able to talk openly and have all my questions and concerns addressed.  I was made to feel quite comfortable with the whole process and feel that, not only were my physical needs addressed, but also my emotional needs as well...The exercises, instruction, and feedback I received, along with the use of the biofeedback equipment and the expert care and empathy of the staff, have helped me to understand the exercise routine I must follow to maintain the excellent results I have seen from this program.  I would highly recommend not only this program, but most importantly the staff of this office.  The office staff, nurses, and Sheila Kane have made this experience not only an educational one but have also helped me laugh along the way."  (age 40)

"I have worked in nursing homes and have witnessed the problems and expenses that incontinence can bring about; I felt that I did not want this for my future.  I went through this program and learned about the control I could have over these muscles.  I found that it has helped a great deal.  I would recommend this program as a preventative, especially after childbirth." (age 45)
