Dr. Case & Melinda Costello, RDMS Attend Ultrasound Conference

Dr. Charlene Case and Melinda Costello, RDMS of our practice attended the March 2010 Ultrasound in Boston, hosted by Harvard Medical School and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Department of Radiology. Two full days were devoted to obstetrical and gynecological ultrasound.

Attendees included obstetricians, gynecologists, radiologists, and ultrasonographers. Many of the speakers are current faculty from Harvard Medical School, including Dr. Beryl Benacerraf who is renowned for her research on ultrasound markers of genetic abnormalities.  In addition, the conference featured two wonderful guest speakers, Dr. Alfred Abuhamad from Eastern Virginia Medical School, and Dr. Peter Callen from the University of California, San Francisco.

During the conference, Dr. Case and Melinda had a chance to attend sessions that reviewed many obstetrical ultrasound topics such as evaluation of the placenta, umbilical cord, fetal heart, central nervous system, skeletal system, genitourinary system, and gastrointestinal tract.  Additional obstetrical topics included the use of ultrasound in evaluating ectopic pregnancies, and further exploration of the role of first trimester screening and second trimester ultrasound in discovering chromosomal abnormalities.  Gynecological lectures focused on topics such as post menopausal bleeding, infertility, and adnexal masses. 
Throughout the conference, the use of 3D ultrasound in a clinical setting was emphasized. According to Dr. Case, “the pictures that were shown were simply incredible!”

Our ultrasound suite in our Springfield office includes two state-of-the-art ultrasound machines, capable of capturing advanced 3D and 4D images when medically indicated. For many years, we have achieved certification from American Institute in Ultrasound Medicine (AIUM). Our ultrasound staff includes four experienced ultrasonographers, all certified by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).
